History of Parang

Parang is a word derived from Spanish origins from the word parranda, which means a spree or fete. Initially it meant a group of persons (men) that went about to give a parranda at an event - a wedding, birthday or other celebration. The group would sing songs with the accompaniement of musical instruments. In Trinidad, parang would mean the singing of spanish songs at mostly Christmas time.

 

Parang music is provided at events to entertain persons and also the parranderos go from house to house within the community. These visits involve singing and dancing as well as the sharing of food and drink.

 

Homer Parranderos have been performing parang for over twenty years locally and regionally. Our

 

band is made up of family members and the tradition has been passed on from generation and our

 

mission is to promote and preserve our cultural artform from diminishing by investing in various

 

initiatives. We have a passion and zest for parang music, so much so that persons hearing our music

 

for the first time quickly become avid lovers.

 

We want to use this medium (music) to stimulate postive culture change and create the multiplier effect in tackling issues of crime etc. Homer Parranderos belives in forging relationships to ensure that this happens. We will take music to the next level and be ambassadors of this type of genre.

Allan Homer
 

Father of the band. This member has over 50 years of experience playing music. He specilaises in playing the mandolin which authenticates the sound of parang music.

His fondest memory is that of carrying around a mattress in the back of his van (Comma) to accomodate all his children being with him in the event that they would want to sleep while going from venue to venue.

Band Members
The band members comprises of the children of Allan and Vilma Homer and other family members. With all the talents combined that God has blessed them with, they make a musical sound pleasing to the ears.
 
Cuatro/ Maracas/ singer - Paul Homer. Paul as one of the older son of Allan has learnt the cuatro well and has also imparted the tradition of parang music to his family.
Box bass/singer - Allan-john Homer.AJ is also involved with the band when he takes time off from his business 

Toc toc/ singer - Susan Homer.Susan, the oldest female regulates the band's timing with the toc toc. She also sings lead and backup.

 

Tambourine/ singer - Nicole Homer.Nicole adds a little spice to the band with her vitality and zest for the music. 

 

Guitar player/singer - Wandalee Homer. She provides the momentum for the band to keep going and also promotes the band.

 

Cuatro Player - Dominic Homer. He's one of the backup singer of the band and adds body to the music.

 

Cuatro Player/ singer - Kimoy Homer. She's one member who has her heart into the playing of her cuatro.

 

Maracas/ Singer - Larry Homer one of the lead singer for the band. He gets into the feel of the music and provides some of the soul of the band.

 

Box Bass/ Bass guitar/ Trumpet - Barry Homer. This member is multi talented with musical instruments and is also the music director.

 

Lead Singer/ Tambourine - Mei-Ling Homer - one of the younger member of the band who's lead sings.

 

Keyboard/vocalist - Ralph Gittens exceptional talent in the keyboards, maracas and vocals.

 

Singer - Burton Sankaralli

 

Back up - Whitney; Catherine; Tessalee, Jonathan, Nepheture - these are the younger members of the band who provides back up in singing and the playing of instruments.

Vilma Homer
 

She was one of the founding members of Homer Parranderos. She was the Mother to all members. We miss you greatly...R.I.P
